The history of the Stannington services is marked by significant changes following the development of the A1. Originally, the area featured two separate petrol stations at the junction of the old A1 and Stannington Station Road, including a Little Chef restaurant that opened in 1972. However, the introduction of the Stannington Bypass in 1987 led to a sharp decline in business for both sites. Over the years, the southbound facility underwent numerous ownership changes, transitioning from Safetyres and Esso to Jet, and eventually being redeveloped by Penny Petroleum into its current Penny on the move branding. While the northbound site's diner was demolished after falling into disrepair, new developments are on the horizon, with the GH Group planning a farm shop, holiday lodges, and an electric vehicle charging hub on the former diner's land. Additionally, local bus stops at the site were curiously named after the defunct Little Chef in official records for over two decades.
