Although space for the Sandbach service station was allocated when the M6 opened in 1963, construction did not take place until 1975. The site comprises two distinct areas linked by a pedestrian footbridge, each featuring three unique diamond-shaped buildings that retain much of their original form, though they have been refreshed with modern grey cladding and red paint. Over the years, the site has seen various updates, including a memorable wedding ceremony held in the Costa Coffee unit in 2002 and significant improvements to its electric vehicle charging infrastructure, which culminated in the installation of high-powered chargers across both sides of the motorway by mid-2026.
