Maidstone motorway service area is situated on the M20 at Junction 8 and has been a notable feature of the route since it opened in 1997. Originally developed under a private initiative scheme involving Esso and Roadchef, the site faced significant planning hurdles and delays throughout the 1980s. Over the years, the facility has undergone various changes, including the rebranding of its hotel and catering outlets, the introduction of a drive-thru, and upgrades to its forecourt under Motor Fuel Group (MFG) management. The site is uniquely positioned as the only service area on the M20, leading to operational quirks such as its role during Operation Brock traffic management, where the exit serves as a point of no return for vehicles heading towards the coast.
