The Darrington service station has a long history linked to the former Great North Road and the demolished Stapleton Hall estate. While the site has undergone various branding shifts and seen the survival of a historic café building through several demolition threats, it is now the subject of a major proposed redevelopment. Plans by Welcome Break and Applegreen aim to modernise the area with a new forecourt, expanded parking, and improved slip roads, although the proposal currently faces planning hurdles and objections from Roadchef and National Highways.
