Historically, Bothwell and Hamilton were managed as a single administrative unit, though they are now listed individually. The site is distinctive for having only 97 parking spaces, making it Roadchef's smallest car park and potentially the smallest of all major motorway service areas. Due to limited investment, the area offers catering more typical of an A-road and retains some red tarmac on its access roads. Following the widening of the M74 in 2017, the site gained a unique dedicated lane, making it one of only two such locations in the UK. More recently, the facilities were enhanced with the addition of a GRIDSERVE electric vehicle charging hub in July 2024.
