Abington services is situated at the junction of the M74 and A74(M), making it the highest service area in the UK at 240 metres above sea level. Officially opened in June 1993 by Eileen Logan, the site was developed by Trusthouse Forte to promote local tourism, creating 30 jobs and costing approximately £500,000. The 20-acre complex includes a 56-bed Travelodge and has featured various artworks, including murals by David Fisher. While plans for a KFC drive-thru were abandoned due to capacity constraints, the site continues to evolve with recent Starbucks refurbishments, enhanced electric vehicle charging facilities, and future plans for a Starbucks drive-thru pod and building extensions.
